Wheaton’s National Moving Month Tip #14: Donate Food

May 24, 2013 | Wheaton News & Events

14. Donate nonperishable food items to a food bank.

If you took a quick survey of your food pantry right now, what would you see? If you’re like most people, you would probably a lot of non-perishable food items, many of which are in heavy aluminum or tin cans.  In our last moving tip we wrote about the two factors that dictate how much moving companies will charge for moves: the distance of your move and the weight of your items.  Now think about your food pantry again.  How many pounds of canned goods do you think you have? Enough that it might affect the cost of your move?

Most people who move have more canned goods than they know what to do with. Wheaton World Wide Moving recognized this problem and joined forces with Move For Hunger, a non-profit that works with Wheaton and other van lines to pick up and transport the unwanted, non-perishable food items that people donate prior to moving.  After the food is picked up, Wheaton will then deliver those items to local food banks. Through Move For Hunger, over 1.4 million pounds of food has been donated to food banks all across America.

Hunger is a huge issue in America: statistically, 1 in 6 people in your life is hungry and more than 17 million children go to bed hungry each night.

Let Wheaton World Wide Moving and Move For Hunger take some of the weight off your shoulders – by donating your non-perishable items you save money and you help out a worthy cause.
