Cleaning Out the Clutter

September 28, 2011 | Packing Guides & Tips

When life is on the go, it can be hard to keep things in line. Our minds are constantly thinking throughout the day of the tasks we need to accomplish by the days end. Of course, the days end comes and it seems we are planning to do the task we “had to get done today”, tomorrow.  And so on.

After a little bit of researching, we came across a great list from our friends at Good Housekeeping on a few simple steps to keeping organized. We picked out a select few we wanted to share with you…Enjoy!

Save: The Date
If you don’t have one already, it is time to invest in a $5 planner from your local convenience store. Note birthdays, anniversaries, or other important dates in your planner. Write messages to yourself, etc. The process shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes, and it will make you feel much more at ease.

Save: Tax Returns
You don’t need to rent out a storage cubicle for the piles of paperwork for this one. You can toss supporting personal documents after three years and supporting business materials after six. Make sure to shred any items containing social security, credit card, account numbers etc.

Donate: Old Clothes & Bags
Clean out that closet! Any clean piece of clothing, bag or shoes you have not worn within the last 18 months should go. Check your local Goodwill or Salvation Army for drop off days, times, etc.

Donate: Old Computers & Electronics
Before donating, make sure it is functional and reusable. If there is no hope for the items, it’s important to recycle or dispose of them properly.

Recycle: Unread Magazines and Newspapers
Bundle up newspapers and magazines you haven’t read within a week of receiving and take them to a local recycling bin.

Toss: Anything Past its Expiration Date
Go through your pantry or freezer and anything that has passed its expiration, toss.

Toss: Outdated Medicines
This is another item that tends to pile up, and it is best to get rid of medicines after their usage date as many can become dangerous if not used in time.
