Relocation: A whirlwind of activity

December 29, 2009 | Employee Relocation

Planning a move is stressful. Period. Although I’m not in the process of relocating, my roommate is. I’ve seen over the past few weeks the realities of interstate moving.

Yesterday was packing day for my roommate. Today is loading day. The days that fall on either side are just plain busy days. From making sure the cat is up-to-date on her shots to picking up one last supply of contacts, there are many loose ends to tie up. Even though she’s a list maker, my roommate’s head is spinning.

She even made the comment, “I’m single with nothing to really worry about but myself. I can’t imagine relocating with a husband and children.”

Because she’s now an unofficial expert since she’s experiencing relocation firsthand,  I asked my roommate what tips she would give others soon to be in her position. Here’s what she said:

  • Start as early as possible – The earlier you start, the more time you have to accomplish every aspect of your relocation.
  • Map out a schedule – Wheaton’s planning calendar is an excellent resource to help you prioritize the details.
  • Ask questions – Your local Wheaton agent is a great resource. They’re available every step of the way to answer any question about moving and storage.
  • Be educated – Know your rights and responsibilities when it comes to moving.
  • Use available resources – Although you can’t trust everything you read on the Internet, there is a plethora of information available. Comparing information and using reliable organizations, such as the Better Business Bureau and American Moving and Storage Association, can help you have the best possible moving experience.

It’s inevitable things will come up that are beyond your control. Use the above tips to minimize stress and maximize your enjoyment of your relocation.
