Questions you should ask (and have answered) about your move

What is a "Wheaton agent?"

A Wheaton Agent is an individually owned and operated moving business and we have them located throughout the country. They work exclusively for Wheaton to move interstate household goods shipments. Each agency performs a variety of services. For instance, when a customer is moving from one state to another, agents are authorized to act on behalf of Wheaton to transport goods across state lines.

Agents act as personal moving consultants. They coordinate all aspects of a move, work with the van line and with the agent at your destination, and remain the point of contact throughout the relocation process.

When is the best time to move?

The best time to move is when it's right for you. However, there are some times of the year that are busier for the moving industry than others. The summer months (May - September) and the end of each month are periods of heavier demand. That means you might have less choice of available moving dates.

When should I begin to contact Wheaton or a Wheaton agent about an upcoming move?

It's a good idea to contact Wheaton or a Wheaton agent with as much notice as possible. It's ideal if Wheaton can provide an estimate five to six weeks prior to your desired moving date. Don't forget, we'll need to set up an in-home survey in order to give you a pricing estimate. Try to select the moving company four weeks before the moving date.

What is an in-home estimate?

A local Wheaton agent will come to your home to complete a visual survey of the belongings that will be part of your move. There's no charge or obligation for a Wheaton agent to provide an in-home moving estimate. The in-home estimate is based on a number of variables. However, the two key factors are shipment weight and distance to destination. In addition, the Wheaton agent will evaluate the need for professional services, such as packing and unpacking, appliance preparation, custom crating and storage. In other words, somewhat of a moving checklist.

Your Wheaton agent will need to look in cabinets and closets, under beds, and at any other area where the items to be moved are not visible. In order to get an accurate moving estimate, all items that are going to be moved need to be taken into account. Be sure to point out items that may not be visible, but will be part of the move. In addition, point out items that will not be included in the move.

What is an Order for Service?

An Order for Service is a signed written agreement made in advance with Wheaton authorizing us and our agents to move your household goods.

What is a Bill of Lading?

A Bill of Lading is the written contract between you and Wheaton which lists the terms of the agreement (services, dates and actual charges, etc.). The Bill of Lading also serves as the receipt for your belongings.

What is an Inventory?

The inventory is the form that lists all the items of a shipment and their condition. You and the driver will sign the inventory after the shipment is loaded and unloaded. The inventory is also used to document any change in the condition of items or any missing items at delivery.

How will I know when my shipment is going to be delivered?

Your driver will contact you 48 hours prior to the delivery of the belongings. Ensure the driver has your destination contact information prior to his departure from your origin residence.
