Fighting hunger in New Orleans -- one swipe at a time

For a number of years, Wheaton World Wide Moving has attended the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference & Exposition. Each year, Wheaton purchases booth space at the conference and participates in the networking opportunities provided by SHRM. As part of that process, Wheaton brings a number of giveaways to the “show” that attendees can pick up as they tour the exhibition floor.

This year the SHRM “show” (as it’s commonly referred to) is in New Orleans, and we decided to do something a little different. Despite time and effort, the people of New Orleans are still suffering in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Instead of the normal giveaways (sure, we’ll have some of those, too) Wheaton decided to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana.

Every time a visitor stops by Wheaton’s booth (#2920) to chat, and lets us swipe their ID card, we’ll make a donation on their behalf to the food bank. The goal is to get 5,000 swipes. Our partner, Move For Hunger (an organization started by a Wheaton Agent) is making it all happen.

In the end, it’s a small gesture. But we hope the other SHRM attendees will carry it forward, whether they’re in New Orleans or their own communities.
