Establing new roots
The Wheaton movers unloaded all of your belongings. All of the boxes are unpacked and your knick knacks are in place. Now what?
After a residential move, especially an interstate move that takes you to a brand new community, you may be left with an empty feeling. Adjusting to new people and places can be difficult. Here are some pointers to help make your house a home and your neighborhood a community.
- Break free from your comfort zone. Try a new restaurant, walk your dog daily in a crowded park, or join a gym.
- Support a cause. Volunteering is a great way to establish ties in your new community. Volunteer Match is one of many Web sites offering volunteer opportunities across the nation.
- Stay active. If you were a member of a club, be it salsa dancing or chess, in your old community, seek one out in your new community. This is a sure-fire way to meet people with common interests.
- Use your network. If you know someone who knows someone who knows someone in your new community, call up that person and invite them to coffee. Pick their brain about all your new area has to offer.
- Follow your dreams. Moving offers a brand new start. Try something new that you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage to.
Most importantly, you have to give yourself time to establish new roots. The moving process begins well before the first box is packed and settling in lasts long after. Go easy on yourself and enjoy your new community.
