Think Moving is hard now? Try moving 100 years ago…

December 23, 2013 | Wheaton News & Events

Remember the popular Oregon Trail game first released in the early 1970s that many of us enjoyed playing as a    child? In the game, the player assumes the role of the wagon leader that is responsible for assisting settlers from one  side of the country to the other. The game was intended to give children insight into a pioneer’s life in the 19th  century.  The 2,000 mile journey presents several hardships, including illness and weather delays.

Relocating is nothing new and goes back to the very roots of the pioneers. For many, moving meant taking a risk, seeking adventure, and leaving something stable for the unknown. Those who were able to embrace moving knew that they were on the brink of something good.

While covered wagons have been upgraded to sophisticated moving trucks and the imminent threat of serious illness  eliminated,  the principle of relocation  remains as it did 100 years ago. Many people who relocate still seek new opportunity, adventure and leave the stability of life behind for the unknown. Over the past 68 years, Wheaton has refined the moving process. Trust your relocation to the experts and take advantage of a much simpler moving process.

Step One: Define your move.

The first step in a successful move is defining the move. Are you moving within the same city or state? Or making a big move out of state or even the country? Knowing where you’re going and when you have to be there will help you take further action should you choose to select a moving company to assist you. Visit Wheaton’s Web site for questions to consider when selecting a moving company.

Step Two: Get an estimate.

The cost of Interstate moves (moves that cross state lines) primarily are based on two factors – weight of your household belongings and distance between your old home and your new home. To get a rough idea of moving costs, use Wheaton’s in-home estimate form.

Step Three: Downsize if necessary

Most people can’t control the distance they’re moving, but can control the weight of their belongings. Getting an estimate from a Wheaton salesperson can be helpful to determine what items may be worth moving or what items you should donate or sell. Downsizing is a great way to reduce your moving costs.

Step Four: Utilize Options

A great part about modern moving is having options. Wheaton can tailor each move to every customer’s unique needs. You can pack your household goods yourself, leave it all to the professionals, or take a hybrid approach. Know your options before you make a move.

Step Five: Know available discounts

You don’t want to spend more money than necessary to relocate. Wheaton offers several discount programs to help reduce the cost of moving.

Embrace the adventure in moving and follow these five simple steps to ensure you get the most out your move.
